No 1 – Bet Easy
Bet Easy may seem like a new name in the market but they are actually just a rebranding caused by a merger of other companies. Formerly known as Crownbet, Bet Easy have also purchased William Hill’s Australian arm.
The Bet Easy app certainly lives up to its name – It’s very easy to use and bet on. The racing section of the app is an absolute beauty, with widescreen race streaming alongside in-running betting. This is a quality interface that sets it apart from other apps.

No 2 – bet365 Australia App
In our opinion, bet365 is the most well known gambling company in the world. We’ve seen their adverts at numerous sporting events including Premier League football, Bundesliga and other sports. They are the current owners, shirt sponsors and stadium sponsors of English football team Stoke City.
The following information is based on our opinions of using the bet365 app at the time of writing this review. Details are subject to change and you can check any information one the bet365 website at any time.
During testing we found the app to be really stable and simple to navigate. It had an uncomplicated look with quick access to the most popular sports via the top menu. Finding the events that we were looking for was simple and so was placing our bets. Overall we were very impressed with the bet365 app.
No 3 – Unibet Australia
The Unibet app is a fun place to bet with ongoing promotions and offers to keep you sweet. The top one being the “Unibet streak” where you can win $5,000 for going on the longest winning streak of the month!
Unibet is an approved betting partner of the major Aussie sports including
- Australian Rugby
- Cricket Australia
- Australia PGA tour
- Australia Tennis
As you can see from the above list Unibet have got all your betting options covered with every major sport listed. The app has the same amount of markets and the same odds as the desktop site. In testing, we were impressed with the Unibet platform. We found a good range of depositing methods such as Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal.

No 4 – The Bookmaker app
Place your bets with the Bookmaker app! This is a darkly themed app that’s got some quality but lacks a certain finesse that keeps it down in 4th place. As usual, there’s loads of sports to bet on and lots of markets to choose from we just felt it wasn’t as slick as the other apps we’ve featured.
One thing we did like was the option to get a Bookmaker card and get your winnings out at the ATM. This standout feature got it into our top 5 – who doesn’t want instant access to their winnings?
- Get instant access to your winnings with your Bookmaker card.
- bonus bet challenges available.
- Over 26 different sports to choose from with multiple events.
No 5 – Sportsbet App
Sportsbet is one of the best-known brands in the Australian gambling market and has been around since 1992. In 2012 they became the biggest corporate bookmaker in Austalia.
Sportsbet is owned by global player Paddy Power – Betfair who bought 51% of the company in 2009 and then completed the take over in 2010 for an estimated $200 million. Their investment in the mobile and app side of the business has seen the sports bet app go from strength to strength to become our top-rated app for both iPhone and Android users.
The app follows a very similar flow to the Paddy Power and Betfair app with the same software and framework being used across the world.
The app is a real gem for sports betting fans and has the options for casino and games built in too. If you’re looking for the best app for all your sports betting needs then this is the app we’d recommend.
- Cash out your bets before the event finishes.
- Create your own punters club and bet against your friends.
- Watch live horse racing on the move from your phone.
How the app looks –
As you can see from the image above there are a lot of offers and features available for punters including –
- Same Game Multi – A killer feature that lets you pick your own bets from the same game as never before. Same game multi is available on bets on Soccer, AFL, NRL, NFL and NBA. Go to the app and select a game you want to bet on and you’ll find all the options to pick from. Build your bets for how you see the game and then sit back and watch the action unfold to see if its a winner.
- Short Form – Each race comes with a nice write up from industry experts giving you a little more knowledge about each race and each horse. There’s also the form of the horse along with information on the jockey and trainer.
- Black Book – This is an awesome feature for racing fans giving you a digital notebook in the app for your nags. Note down any horses that catch your eye and check back on your notes when they run again. As far as we know, at the time of writing, the Sportsbet app is the only app to offer this feature. This really is an awesome app for horse racing fans.
- Stats and Insights
- Live racing – Steam racing from Victoria and South Australia directly to iPhone, iPad or any Android mobile or tablet. Be aware -the streams are usually a few seconds behind the actual live race if you’re planning to bet in running.
The full list of betting apps legally available to Australian punters.
Ubet – Formerly Tabcorp and Tatts Ubet offers bettors a solid platform to bet on a wide range of sports and casino games. We liked the option to listen to TAB radio via the mobile site and app.
Sportsbetting.com.au – Self-advertised as “No Gimmicks, just great fixed odds betting” Sportsbetting.com.au certainly live by that motto. The app is uncomplicated and isn’t plastered with ads like some other apps. There’s a range of Tote betting options and occasional promotions for existing customers. If you want a simplistic betting experience then this could be the app for you.
Betstar.com.au – Formed in 2007 Betstar is based in Melbourne and Darwin. We like the apps option to bet on the favourite versus the field, which you can get on all Australian racing. The mobile sports app is simple to navigate and has been designed specifically for quick bet placement. If you want a quick bet head over to the live betting section to see the current events to bet on. You can bet live on soccer, Aussie rules, cricket, and other sports.
Pointsbet.com.au – The Pointsbet app is a sport and spread betting app which offers a different betting option for Australian punters. They offer “request a market” bets on EPL, NFL, and NBA games – dream up your bets and tweet them and they’ll try and price them up for you. There are some quality promotions on offer too with the NBA early payout offer on selected games – check the site for details.
Betfair Australia – The Betfair exchange is the world-leading betting exchange and this is an app for a more experienced bettor. You can back and lay bets and effectively become the bookie yourself. When we were testing this app we found it to have good odds and you can lay off your bets to ensure a profit regardless of the result – a winner in our book.
Mad bookie – Taken over by Top Betta in 2017 Mad Bookie continues to run as its own brand rather than being merged into the Top Betta brand. There weekly “Mad Lays” are worth checking out where they lay down the gauntlet to the punters and usually take on a short price favourite. When the mad lays are running the guarantee to have the best odds of any corporate bookmaker in Austalia on the team they are taking on. As you’d expect from the name they are Mad, but they’re not Bad!
Neds.com.au – Neds only launched their site and betting app in 2017 but this seems to have been an advantage to them. The app is slick and designed very well to modern standards. They clearly took advantage of being a new startup rather than having to evolve an old platform into a new app. They’ve done so well since launch that at the end of 2018 they were acquired by GVC holdings (Ladbrokes & Coral) for $95 Million.
Palmer bet – A very good looking app that has some recent updates to its interface and performance. This app also has a simple download for Android – Go to Palmerbet.com on any Android mobile or tablet and you’ll see a popup to download the app – or head to the “downloads” section on the menu of the mobile site.
William Hill – William Hill entered the marketing in 2010 and have now exited, we’d expect to see these brands players to be merged into the BetEasy brand soon.
Top betta – One of the smaller players in the market. A pools based system with prize pools and different buy-in levels.
Betting in Australia Guide
There are many mobile sports betting apps available in Australia, and although there are plenty to choose from, we only select the very best of them when it comes to making our list of the best Australian sports betting apps for mobile and tablet devices.
The main reason for this is because we like to make sure that we test all of the apps thoroughly before we review them. Doing this then enables us to be as honest as we can be when providing you with a detailed description of the betting apps and what functionalities they have. That will then enable you to be more decisive when making your decision as to which of the available app(s) you select to install on your mobile or tablet device.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best betting app for Android?
On Android, we did some very different testing due to the way you install the apps. Here are our top 3 apps specifically for the Android platform –
1 – Bet Easy – Simple to install and an excellent place for Android users to bet
2 – Sportsbet – Our overall winner and a very close second when looking at betting apps for Android
3 – Bet365 – Solid performance from a respected name
Why is there no betting apps on the Australian Google Play Store?
Google’s regulations mean that real money gambling is not allowed on the Play Store to prevent people under 18 from having access to them. This used to be the case across the world but has changed in 2016 in the UK followed by other countries. So we could see them in Australis Google Play Store very soon.
Is sport betting legal in Australia?
Yes, sports betting is legal! There are different restrictions on how betting works depending on which state you are in, this is mainly around promotions and advertising. For example, it is illegal to advertising gambling promotions in the state of New South Wales.
How does tax on gambling work?
In Australia, the tax is applied to the bookmaker rather than the customer. The bookmakers pay a levy to the government on their takings and incorporate this into their costs. Winning a bet is considered a windfall so it is not classed as an income for regular players.
Which bookmakers are Australian owned?
Here are the corporate bookmakers that are Australian –
- Play Up interactive (Top Betta & Mad Bookie)
- Crownbet/ the stars group (Bet Easy). Also, previously purchased or owned Tom Waterhouse and Centrebet. 62% of the holding company is Australian owned at the time of writing.
- Palmerbet – Licensed in NSW and the family behind the company have operated from Canterberry race track for over 30 years. A true Aussie gem!
There are other companies that are licensed in various states but we are unable to find details to confirm the exact ownership of these companies. We will add to the list as more information becomes available.
What is the Tote and how does it work?
The Tote is a racing betting system that pools the stakes together and splits the pool between the winners using a weighting system. The more money that is on a particular horse the less the returns will be, the less fancied a horse the more you will win if you select that horse. This is a very popular way of betting partially when on track.
This differs from fixed odds betting where the returns are at a set price regardless of how many people bet on it.
What is multi-betting?
Also known as parlays and accumulators, multi-betting allows you to combine up to 25 single bets into one larger bet and combines the odds of all the singes. In order for a multi-bet to win, you’ll need each leg you’ve selected to win if one loses then the whole bet loses.
Why do the odds change in live betting?
If you’re betting on an app with live betting you many notices the odds change before you get the bet placed and you have to reconfirm. This is due to the changing conditions affecting the odds. This can be a thing such as goals scored, runs scored, wickets are taken and time changes. It’s perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.
