Czech Republic v England Match Preview & Trends

Top two clash at Wembley

After the stalemate with Scotland on Friday night, England boss Gareth Southgate has come under heavy criticism for the performance. His cautious approach, starting lineup and chosen substitutions have all been questioned as the Three Lions failed to fire at Wembley. An improved display will be needed against a Czech Republic side growing on confidence after a solid opening two rounds.

After their resounding 2-0 win over Scotland, and taking a point off Croatia, The Czech Republic could further frustrate the English crowd as they have proved their quality already.  Patrik Schick is currently the joint top scorer in the tournament after his brace at Hampden Park and goal against Croatia. If he finds the net again, keeping company with the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo may continue for the big Czech striker.

The Czech’s are aiming to build on their rich history in the European Championships with another successful tournament. The 1976 winners and 1996 runners-up have also finished 3rd on two separate occasions and made the semi-finals again in 2004. Having qualified through England’s group, they face the Three Lions again in Group D and will be keen to avenge the two qualification defeats they suffered at the hands of Southgate’s side.

The Czech Republic covered 230.9km in the opening two rounds and have maintained a passing accuracy of 76% and averaging 47% possession. The Czech’s have made 55 passes into the attacking third with 41 of those in key areas. They have completed 8/17 crosses, which left them at 47%. In comparison, England has covered 204.9km in the first two games, maintaining a passing accuracy of 88% and averaged 56% possession. The English made 56 passes into the attacking third with 22 of those in key areas. They completed 13/38 crosses, which left them at 34%.
