Italy v England Match Preview & Trends

History awaits the victors at Wembley as Italy battle the home crowd

Gareth Southgate has waited 25 years for the opportunity to erase the ghost of Euro 96 when he missed the crucial penalty in the semi-final in front of the home supporters to send England crashing out. That heartache will never leave him but the memory will less painful if he can lead the current group of Three Lions to victory on Sunday. England has never won the European Championship so the opportunity to go down in history for Harry Kane’s men is huge.

Italy has a prestigious history in major tournaments and has arguably been the stand-out team from day one of Euro 2020. Their resurgence under Roberto Mancini has been remarkable after not even qualifying for the last World Cup. He has restored national pride during this undefeated run built on traditional defensive solidarity with a splash of flair and class in attack. Mancini is a serial winner so reaching the final will not be enough for him, only victory will suffice.

This is the first European Championship meeting between the two nations. Italy won their semi-final 5-3 on penalties at against Spain, extending their winning streak to six. England defeated Denmark 2-1 at home in their last league match to also extend their unbeaten streak to six.

Italy has been reliant on Federico Chiesa, Lorenzo Insigne, and Matteo Pessina. The three players are the team’s joint top scorers with two goals in this tournament. England’s talisman in front of goal has been Harry Kane, who has netted on four occasions, including one match-opening goal. The striker is tied for third in the league’s scoring charts in 2020. Raheem Sterling has been the other stand-out performer for Southgate’s men with three goals so far.

Italy have covered 587km in the tournament so far and has maintained a passing accuracy of 88% and averaging 56% possession. The Italians have made 249 passes into the attacking third with 170 of those in key areas. They have completed 24/69 crosses, which left them at 35%. In comparison, England has covered 663.6km in the first four games, maintaining a passing accuracy of 88% and averaged 54% possession. The English made 234 passes into the attacking third with 142 of those in key areas. They completed 27/88 crosses, which left them at 31%.

Key trends
