Slovakia v Spain Match Preview & Trends

Struggling Spain need to find goals

When the draw was made, most assumed that Spain would top Group E with Poland not far behind. Sweden and Slovakia have disrupted the usual protocol and have really shaken the group up. For all their possession and lovely flowing football, Spain are struggling for goals and have not created many opportunities despite seeing a lot of the ball in key areas.

Slovakia are in a great position to qualify and will be excited at the prospect of facing the blunt Spaniards rather than fearful as many predicted. Beating Poland has given them renewed confidence that they can handle the big occasion no matter who the opponent is. Spain can not afford any more slip-ups after only drawing their other two fixtures. Only a win will do as the Swedes and Slovaks sit comfortably in the top two positions and the dangerous Poland, lurking just behind the Spanish.

Slovakia covered 220km in the opening two rounds and have maintained a passing accuracy of 86% and averaging 50% possession. The Slovaks have made 42 passes into the attacking third with 22 of those in key areas. They have completed 14/32 crosses, which left them at 44%. In comparison, Spain has covered 220.4km in the first two games, maintaining a passing accuracy of 88% and averaged 72% possession. The Spaniards made 164 passes into the attacking third with 74 of those in key areas. They completed 12/58 crosses, which left them at 21%.
