Spain v Italy Match Preview & Trends

The final awaits one of these fine sides as Mancini faces Enrique on the big stage

London is the host city for this heavyweight contest between Spain and Italy. Having beaten Switzerland and Belgium respectively in the quarter-finals to reach this stage both sides will be confident ahead of this vital semi-final match-up. Another match in  England awaits the winners of this game where they will play either Switzerland or Spain at Wembley Stadium in front of an anticipated 60,000 crowd.

The tournament has had many twists and turns so far, will the unpredictable trend continue in this pulsating semi-final line-up? With the quality of players on show, anything can happen and we are in for another exciting line-up as we approach the final stages.

Italy have continued from where they started and been consistently excellent throughout the tournament. The last 16 tie with Austria aside, they have comfortably won each match and even looked in total control against the much-fancied Belgians. Having overcome the world’s number one ranked side, nothing will phase Roberto Mancini’s side.

Spain on the other hand have not had such an easy ride to reach this stage. After a rollercoaster ride through the group stages, their erratic form continued in the knockout phase. They have now been taken to extra time in both the last 16 tie with Croatia and their last game against the Swiss in the quarter-final. Luis Enrique has a talented squad but rotating his tired youngsters at this stage is surely too risky especially with the Azzurri in such fine form.

Italy have covered 587km in the tournament so far and has maintained a passing accuracy of 88% and averaging 56% possession. The Italians have made 249 passes into the attacking third with 170 of those in key areas. They have completed 24/69 crosses, which left them at 35%. In comparison, Spain has covered 623km in the first four games, maintaining a passing accuracy of 89% and averaged 67% possession. The Spaniards made 399 passes into the attacking third with 200 of those in key areas. They completed 40/140 crosses, which left them at 29%.
