Betting Apps Canada FAQ

Quick answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about sports betting apps in Canada

Are sports betting apps legal?

Yes. In most provinces and territories, single-game betting is available through state-run betting sites. Additionally, many popular sports betting apps are also available in a widely-accepted legal grey area. However, Ontario has launched a licensing system that will make privately-run sportsbooks like PointsBet, FanDuel Sportsbook, and Bet365 widely available and operating in a state of 100% legality. Alberta and Saskatchewan are both moving towards this system as well, meaning there will soon be no grey are for Canadian bettors!

What is the best sports betting app in Canada ?

While this is certainly a subjective question, here at BettingApps.com, we've chosen to rank Betway as the top dog in Canada.

For us, it just checks all of the boxes, including:

  • Established in Canada
  • Licensed in Ontario
  • Great eSports betting
  • Fantastic Odds

We're not sure there's much more that needs to be said, but you can read our Betway review if you still have questions, comments, or concerns.

How do I choose a sports betting app?

There are a few key factors to look at when choosing your next sports betting app:

  • Bonus offer - Make sure you're setting yourself up for success
  • Sports markets - While most sportsbooks offer the most popular sports, like hockey and football, there are of course a few that specialize in a certain sport. You'll definitely want to make sure your favorite sport has in-depth coverage.
  • Betting features - Many bettors love a Same Game Parlay or an online casino. Choosing a sportsbook optimized for the way you want to play is crucial

Luckily, we're here with in-depth analysis reviews of several of the top sports betting apps in Canada to help you evaluate these factors and choose your next sportsbook.

Can I trust a sports betting app in Canada?

You can rest assured that all of the betting apps you see here or anywhere else on our site are perfectly safe, secure, and legitimate.

The Canadian betting world is certainly in a state of flux in recent years, so there have been a lot of questions poping up about what's legal and what's not. On this site, you can trust that any betting app you download will treat you right.

Is single game betting legal in Canada?

Single-game sports betting is legal in Canada. Ontario is also legal through licensed online sports betting apps.

It has been generally accepted to bet on single games anywhere in Canada using an offshore betting site in the past.

Soon, several provinces will be mimicking Ontario and launching their own licensing systems that allow users to bet on privately-run sports betting apps that have become licensed and regulated through local governments.

Are offshore sportsbooks legal?

This is a way trickier question than you'd expect! Right now, offshore sportsbooks exist in a legal grey area. So they're not exactly legal or illegal, so it can feel a little greasy to bet with one.

However, with the new licensing system active in Ontario and similar situations coming to other provinces, this grey area will shrink and questions like this will pop up less often.

Best Sports Betting Apps in Canada

Of all of the betting apps currently available in Canada, the best betting apps in Canada are Betway, Bet365, PointsBet, and Caesars Sportsbook. These apps are considered top-notch due to their exceptional features and user-friendly interface.

How we Rate Betting Apps

Across the board, there are tons of ways betting apps can differentiate themselves from one another. From typical betting features and odds to bonus offers and promotions to more general aspects of using the app like the aesthetics or UX, there are numerous ways a betting app can soar or sink.

Quite frankly, there are too many variables to mention, but we've distilled what we believe are the most important elements into the list below. Is something stands out to you or you're not sure what we mean, you can click on an option to learn more about how we evaluate this aspect of a betting app.

Betting App Features

Licence

Before the days of regulated sports betting, when many bookies still operated in the grey area, it was very difficult for the layman to surmise who they should trust. There was no governing body making sure that all of your information was being handled responsibly or that you were being treated fairly by the sportsbook.

As with anywhere that you might be uploading your credit card or bank account info, the idea that you may end up with a betting app that you can't trust is a bit scary. Since Ontario has launched its licensing system, Canadian bettors can look to sportsbooks that have been granted licenses as one they can trust.

If a sports betting app has been granted a license, that means it is officially legal and regulated by the government. The bar for operation has been raised and all licensed betting apps have to live up to a strict set of standards.

Many would say that trust is the most important part of choosing a sports betting app, and an official license means that a sports betting app can be trusted.

Feel

'Feel' can admittedly be a pretty broad area, but here we're talking all about the user experience.

There are a few elements of the user experience that stick out in particular - usability, aesthetics, and layout.

The most important aspect of a betting app's feel is its usability. If an app is laggy or slow, then it can be difficult to use in crucial betting situations. No one wants to miss out on a live bet because you couldn't switch tabs on an app quickly enough!

The aesthetic aspect is really a matter of personal taste, but in the long run, it can matter a lot. It's 2022 - no one wants to feel like they're opening an Excel document when they're trying to have fun. To some, it may make little to no difference, but I personally like to load up a BetMGM or FanDuel Sportsbook and know that I'm being treated to super-slick, modern sports betting experience.

The layout is another important feature that folds into both the previous categories. A sports betting app's layout should be logical and easy to pick up and play, even if you're not an experienced bettor.

Betting Bonuses

To try and get you in the door, many sports betting apps will offer users lucrative bonuses. However, there can be a stark difference between a strong bonus that sets you up to succeed or a fake bonus that is really just advertising.

Then once you start betting, you don't want the free bet train to stop coming in do you? We try to evaluate sports betting apps' sign up offers and ongoing promotions for new customers holistically to determine what betting app offers the most value to the user.

This can be a bit tricky in Canada because we are not allowed to advertise or discuss the specific terms of a betting app's bonus offer due to regulatory restrictions.

We try our best to give our honest opinion in regards to what you can expect to get when you sign up through one of our claim buttons while staying compliant with the legislation, so please excuse us if we're ever being a little too vague here and there.

Bonuses not available in Ontario

Betting Variety

We can expect a fairly standard suite of ways to play from betting apps. Point spreads, moneylines, over/unders, and multi-game parlays should come as no surprise to any bettor. However, more advanced ways to play may be offered on different betting apps, with there sometimes being a stark contrast in both the markets available and the level of quality offered.

Types of Bets

Like we said previously, the vanilla bets we can expect. Spreads and moneylines don't do much to get the blood of an experienced bettor pumping after a little while. But more advanced tyoes of bets, like same game parlays, custom line creation, and live betting can make a great betting app stand out in a sea of good betting apps.

FanDuel Sportsbook, PointsBet, and Bet365 are a few examples of betting apps that do this right. FanDuel's same game parlay creation soars above the competition, PointsBet's unique PointsBetting system can make just about any game interesting, and Bet365 has the best live betting in the business.

Sports Offered

The NHL, NFL, and NBA will be available on just about any betting app, and if they're not you already know that you're in the wrong place. But a betting app that really goes the extra mile can be very vvaluable to bettors.

If an app offers access to betting markets for more nice sports like darts, table tennis, and snooker, then you know you'll never run out of ways to wager money. Betway offers users a fantastic variety of betting markets. With a topnotch selection of eSports betting opportunities and a deep pool of international leagues to bet on for more popular sports like basketball and hockey, you know that you have plenty of ways to play.

Other Games

These days, many betting apps are spreading their wings and looking to ensure users have as diverse an experience as possible. If they cover all the bases then you don't need to go anywhere else, right?

To satisfy as many possible needs as possible, you can often find other types of games like daily fantasy or online casino directly on your sports betting app. Caesars Sportsbook and BetMGM, for example, have gone the extra mile and provided users with a great online casino experience in addition to the sports betting platform.

Odds

It seems obvious, but it's often overlooked - odds make the app.

If a sports betting app doesn't have odds that are competitive with the rest of the market, then there's just no way it's worth your time. Even small differences can add up to major missed opportunities on parlays and during the lifetime of your betting career.

Caesars Sportsbook is an example of a betting app that always features great odds. The standard odds often carry less juice than the competition, and when you factor in the amount of odds boosts available, it quickly becomes clear that Caesars Sportsbook provides punters with plenty of bang for their buck.

Payment Methods

There are usually a number of different ways you are able to fund your sports betting account, and ensuring that you're able to safely, securely, and conveniently do so is a major point of emphasis when evaluating a sportsbook.

Of course, most credit and debit cards are allowed on just about every major sports betting app we have listed here, as well as simple bank-to-business transfers.

Other common payment methods offered on Canadian betting apps include Interac, ecoPayz, Paysafecard, and MuchBetter.

The variety of payment methods, the deposit and withdrawal limits, as well as the time to withdraw are all elements that we look at when assigning scores to a betting app's banking.

Where is Sports Betting Legal in Canada?

Canadians now have access to 100% legal single-game sports betting, but many are still stuck with the provincial lottery system as the only non-grey market option.

Many don't want to use lottery platforms as they tend to underperform compared to privately-run competitors. But now, Ontario has changed the game and opened the floodgates. In a drastic shift, major operators like FanDuel Sportsbook, BetMGM, and Bet365 are now easily available and operating as sports betting apps in Ontario.

The greasy legal grey area is fading away, and a new dawn for betting canucks has begun. Check out the top sports betting apps in your province below!

New Betting Apps in Canada

Caesars sportsbook app store

Caesars Sportsbook is one of the new betting apps making a splash in Canada

While many of the books you see here may be newly licensed, they're not exactly new to Canadian bettors. In fact, many sports betting apps that have gained the licence previously operated in a legal grey area throughout the country.

But not all of them. In fact, 2022 was an incredibly exciting year that has saw many new betting apps come to Canada.

With the launch of an official licensing system in Ontario, the betting apps have come floating into Canada like a moth to a flame. Many major books that have previously only operated in the US are now mainstays on the Canadian betting market.

How to sign up with a new Betting App

Hopefully, our recommendations have been enough information to get you started with a new Canadian betting app. You know what apps are legal, if bonuses are available, and the last piece of the puzzle is now the actual work of registering your account.

So how do you do that? follow these steps and you'll be betting in no time!

How to Sign up with a Betting App in 6ix Easy Steps

  1. Choose a new app from one of our lists
  2. Click the button to visit the site
  3. Click on the Sign Up or Join buttons when you get there
  4. Fill in your account details*
  5. Verify your email address
  6. Start betting!

Oh, what's that? You still want to earn more about betting apps in Canada? Okay then!

*Necessary account details
Patrick Corkery

Patrick Corkery

You'll need to provide the betting app with the following details in order to set up your account and verify your identity:

  • Your full name
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Residential address
  • Username
  • Password

Depending on what sports betting app you have chosen, you may have to fork over a few more details. Don't worry - all of the sports betting apps we recommend on our site can be trusted to handle your personal information responsibly.

Betting Bonuses

Betting apps have typically gone above and beyond to lure new users to their side. With the exciting growth period in Canadian online sports betting that we're living in, they know that now is the time to get you on their side for the long haul.

But how do they do that? By throwing some loonies your way, of course. That's right - many sports betting apps offer bonuses, so users have the chance to put themselves in a position to succeed right out of the gate.

However, not all of these sign up offers are created equal, and there can actually be quite a variance between a sign up bonus that gives versus one that takes. And even just differentiating between different types of offers can be a major headache.

Due to regulatory restrictions, we are not allowed to advertise bonuses for Canadian betting apps. It is our goal to properly convey to you what we really think about each betting app as well as provide context on betting bonuses separately. What you do with that knowledge moving forward is up to you.

How to Bet on Sports Betting Apps

The two most important steps in learning how to bet on sports are identifying what event you want to wager on and the style of bet you'd like to place.

While most betting apps offer a fairly standard set of bets and betting markets (it's not like you'll struggle to find NHL puck line wagers anywhere), the depth of markets offered and range of bets available can vary a lot from bookie to bookie.

Pointsbet Same Game Parlay

Same Game Parlay is one of the betting features you should look for in your next betting app

Betting App Markets

You can expect to find the usual suspects on many betting apps. The NFL, NHL, and MLB are available just about everywhere, but there are a ton of other sports that many betting apps offer for those with varied tastes.

eSports is growing in popularity all over the world, and several bookmakers like Unibet and 888sport offer to bet on many eSports markets. In Britain, some more niche sports like darts and snooker have quite strong followings, so Bet365 offers a massive slate of lines for all the James Wade fans out there (if you know, you know).

These may not appeal to you yet, but there's a good chance they will as you go further and further down the rabbit hole of online sports betting.

Types of Bets Available on Betting Apps

Single-Game Wagers

This one's pretty easy to understand - single-game wagers are single bets placed on a single event. Easy, right?

If you just wanted to bet on who will win tonight's Maple Leafs-Canadiens game, then you would probably place a single-game bet on whichever side you think will come out on top.

However, many betting apps allow for many different types of single-game wagers. Some of the following bets are available as single-game wagers:

  • Spread bets
  • Moneyline bets
  • Total bets or Over/Unders
  • Player props
  • Touchdown/Goal Scorer
  • Period/half/quarter bets

Spreads

Also known as handicap betting, spread betting places a projected score on the game and evens out the odds so each side of a bet has close to equal odds.

For example, if you were to look at the matchup of a Philadelphia Eagles vs. Los Angeles Rams game and the Rams had -6.5 next to them, that means the spread is 6.5.

In order to cover the spread, or win the bet, the Rams would have to win by at least 7 points, while the Eagles only have to not lose by 7 points.

It's a great way of normalizing bets so that each side has an equal chance of winning and can make lopsided matchups a lot more interesting.

Moneylines

This is the most simple way of betting on a single game. Moneyline wagers require the bettor to pick who will win the game straight up, with no point spreads or handicaps required.

On the plus side, these bets are very simple and easy for the bettor to understand. Conversely, you do lose a lot of value if you bet on favorites as their odds will be lower than if you bet against the spread.

Personally, I love to throw favorite moneyline bets into parlays as they are good for enhancing the odds even more, while underdog moneyline bets are better to wager straight up because they already have high odds.

Over/Under Bets

Over/under, or 'totals,' bets are fairly simple bets placed on how many total points will be scored in a game.

For example, a given NBA game may have an over/under line of 224.5 points. If you bet the over on that number you win if the total points scored are at least 225 points, and you lose if there's only 224 or less.

It's a fairly simple way to bet that is very easy to follow, even for novice bettors.

Multi-Game Wagers

Similar to single-game wagers, multi-game wagers are fairly self-explanatory. Also known as parlays, multi-game wagers allow you to combine bets from multiple games into one single bet with enhanced odds.

So if you wanted to bet on the Raptors and Grizzlies to both win their games on a given night, then you could bet on them individually and/or combine them into a single multi-game wager.

You encounter more risk this way, as both results need to hit in order for your bet to be a winner, but you also stand to get a significantly larger payout if you do win.

If you're a real gambler, the risk may be worth the reward.

Same Game Parlays

Also known as Bet Builders, Same Game Parlays allow bettors to take the principle of multi-game wagers and apply it to a single event.

Say the Golden State Warriors are playing the Sacramento Kings on a Saturday afternoon NBA match-up. If you know Steph Curry has had the hot hand lately, you may think he's ready for a huge scoring explosion.

With Same Game Parlays, you can choose to bet the over on Curry's point total and combine it with another result, like the Warriors winning against the spread. This way, you get a bigger payout than just betting on one of the results.

Futures

Futures bets allow you to make bets on results that will play out over the length of the season.

Common bets include major awards winners, championship results, and over/under bets on win totals.

Player Props

Player prop bets are wagers that allow you to bet on the stat totals of a single player in a game.

For example, if you bet on Connor McDavid to score a goal at any point throughout a game or Steph Curry to have over 28.5 points in a game, these would be considered player propr.

Player props are offered as standalone wagers but are oftentimes bet on as part of a same game parlay.

Betting Advice from the Pro
Ben Smith

Ben Smith

We all love to create crazy parlays. Putting a bunch of bets together and seeing the odds skyrocket is an undeniable adrenaline rush.

But that's not always the smart play - in fact, most of the time it's not.

As much fun as 4-leg parlays can be, you'll be better off sticking to straight bets the vast majority of the time, especially early on.

Once you've started betting online, there's a good chance you'll want to expand your horizons. Sure, there's a ton of fun to be had betting on the NHL, but everything gets passe after a while.

To mix things up, many sports betting apps also have casino apps. This way, you'll never get bored and will always have something new and exciting to dig into.

Common games offered across online casino platforms can include poker, blackjack, Texas Hold 'Em, roulette, craps, and of course slots.

While you can usually access a sportsbook's online casino platform in an abbreviated fashion through their primary app, that is atypically an abridged version. The best online casinos will usually offer a standalone app in addition to their sports betting app's casino section.

Both Bet365 and 888sport do this, and they are two of the absolute best online casino/sportsbook hybrids on the market.

Android Betting Apps

These days, pretty much all dedicated sports betting apps are available for both IOS and Android devices.

However, not all Android apps are available on Google Play. Don't worry - just because a sports betting app is not listed on Google Play doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Many operators have yet to list their apps on Google Play due to regulatory or compliance issues. In time, most major sportsbooks will have their app on Google Play, but for now, you should be able to just head on over to the company's website and download the APK file directly from there.

It's an extra step that is a bit annoying, but over time all Android betting apps should be available on Google Play.

iPhone Betting Apps

Many of the country's best betting apps are available on the App Store

Fortunately for iPhone bettors, they tend to have it a bit easier than their Android counterparts.

Just about every major sportsbook has an official betting app hosted on the App Store, easily available for download. This is a major priority of most betting sites, as the vast majority of bets are placed on the go, so most sportsbooks will launch with an iPhone betting app already available so their users can truly hit the ground running.

Unlike Google, which used to have strict restrictions on gambling apps being available on Google Play, Apple has had a laissez-faire attitude towards sports betting apps on their platform in North America with most legal betting apps having the ability to offer their wares to users.

Live Betting Apps

Live betting has become one of the most popular ways for Canucks to bet on sports in recent years. Without actually being there, live betting can make you feel like you're still part of the action.

With live betting, you can place in-play bets while a game is ongoing. You can adapt on the fly and hedge or double-down on your pre-game wagers, or you can just go ahead and create entirely new bets based on how the event is unfolding.

Live betting makes you feel like you're part of the game from the comfort of your couch

These days, many betting apps offer live, or in-play, wagering opportunities, but not all reach the same level. There tends to be a separation between the Waynes and the Keiths.

Important live betting features include live streaming, quickly-updating odds, and the opportunity to place a deep variety of bets on any given game. Most betting apps should strive to check at least one of boxes, with the best sports betting apps for live betting hitting all three!

Betting App Payment Options

Of course, you need to be able to quickly and easily deposit and withdraw your money to and from a betting app. This is the bare minimum to which we should hold any sports betting app.

But some sports betting apps go a bit deeper and offer users the chance to deposit and withdraw using a wide variety of payment options for a more convenient banking experience.
