Hello everybody. I’m very pleased to welcome you to our Cheltenham day 1 tips blog. We are expecting a very good festival this year, just like others in the past!! Last year saw a very good year for the punters with a lot of the expected winners holding true, such as Footpad, Buveur D’air and Altior. Will 2019 prove to be a year fo the favourites or a year for the outsiders. We all wait in anticipation once more on what this fine festival produces.
We hope to keep you informed throughout Twitter on which horse we are fancying for each race as the latest news develops, but here is where our thoughts are as the horses start to get declared. From previous experience no horse is a certain to start and horses you expect to feature can often let you down so our first recommendation is that if you are looking to back a horse early doors, back it on a non-runner no bet basis.
We use the phrase ‘tips’ very loosely here. These are more our selections from the countless hours we have spent researching in to each race throughout the Cheltenham festival. We will be attending the festival as usual this year so these selections are our early selections based on the information available to us at the time.
Cheltenham odds with Bet365
The Cheltenham festival is renowned for its wide open fields and I don’t expect this year to be any different. There’ll be some expected winners, no doubt, but there’s also bound to be the long shot that romps home to surprise everyone. These selections offer a mix of ways of thinking and are comprised of both a ‘to win selection’ and an ‘each way selection’ for each race.
All our selections are below. It is also important to take in to consideration that the prices shown here were the prices that were available at the time of writing and are subject to change. Each bookmaker referenced was the bookmaker offering the best price at time of publishing. Take a look at my Cheltenham day 1 tips below.

Justification of picks
Supreme Novices Hurdle – 13:30
TO WIN – AL DANCER – Four back to back wins means this horse heads up the odds table. Current favourite and with good reason in my opinion. A good price to the opening race as well I believe at 4/1. Has a good chance of drifting too.
EACH WAY – ITCHY FEET – I’m a big fan of current form when it comes to the Cheltenham Festival races and 33/1 on a horse with three wins and one second place in its last four races reeks of value to me.
Arkle trophy – 14:10
TO WIN – GLEN FORSA – A superb jumper and a stayer that has more chance than any in my mind to win this race.
EACH WAY – ORNUA – I was torn between Ornua and Kalashnikov here, but decided to go with the stronger odds of Ornua at 16/1. Both horses are in great form and have good chances of finishing within the places, if failing to secure first. If Ornua doesn’t end up running I will be replacing for Kalashnikov.
Paddy Power Cheltenham Offer.
Paddy Power are very big in to their horse racing. As such they often put out big offers to take advantage of. This year will be no different. Check out their latest offer from the banner below.

Festival Handicap Chase – 14:50
TO WIN – MISTER WHITAKER – A wide open field in this race where anything is possible. Stakes in this race will be small from me. Mister Whitaker has dipped in form of late, but has proven he can stay even in the toughest of conditions.
EACH WAY – LAKE VIEW LAD – Probably the most consistent of all the horses racing and at a good price too. This horse doesn’t tend to lead many packs, but is frequently up there with the leader come the finish line.
The first handicap race of the festival. 3 miles and 19 fences to tackle in this race, which is run round the old course. This race holds a lot of prestige and winners of this race normally go on to bigger and better things.
Champion Hurdle – 15:30
TO WIN – BUVEUR DAIR – A number of horses here capable of winning and Apple’s Jade may well have a small weight advantage, but it is Buveur Dair that has the winning course form. Apple’s Jade has been beaten here more times than she has won and this leads me to lean towards Buveur Dair who is now looking to win this race for the third time running.
EACH WAY – ESPOIR DALLEN – Three consecutive wins from this horse should have it running full of confidence here. A long shot when looking at the two favourites, but a good price in my opinion.
Betfair offer on Day One.

Mares Hurdle – 16:10
TO WIN – BENIE DES DIEUX – A Willie Mullins horse that has been tipped by Mullins as being his best chance of a win coming in to the festival. That is good enough for me!
EACH WAY – JESTER JET – Some quality horses in the running for this race, but it is highly unlikely all of them will end up running. Jester Jet looks pretty nailed on and hasn’t seen a place outside the top 2 in its last 6 races.
National Hunt Chase – 16:50
TO WIN – A PLUS TARD – A Wide open race which sees my to win selection head for the outright favourite. Good odds though to be achieved even on the favourite due to the openness. A Plus Tard has ran well coming in to the race and carries the best current form by some margin.
EACH WAY – MILITARIAN – From the favourite to the outright underdog. Militarian foots the prices at 66/1 which I see as fantastic value for an each way bet. One glitch is all this horse has from its last four races. Three first places and a fourth. Good value and will have just as much chance as any in my opinion, if conditions are as rough as they are expected to be.
Novices’ Handicap Chase – 17:30
TO WIN – OK CORRAL – Ok Corral is currently second favourite behind Ballyward in the prices. However Ok Corrall has looked in fantastic condition in its last two trips out and I believe he has a good chance of winning this race by a good margin.
EACH WAY – PLANTAGENET – Huge odds being offered here by select bookmakers on this horse. It may not have shown the staying power of some of the horses in the field, but what it has shown is consistency. Two first places, three second places and a third from its last 6 races suggests this horse is no risk taker. However this may be a good thing with this being the last race of the day on expected harsh conditions.
