Legal sports betting in Iowa went live as of August 15th 2019 and is regulated by the Iowa Racing and Gaming commission. Since then a number of sportsbook operators have emerged, offering their services online and within land based venues across the state.
Iowa was the 10th state to go live with online betting, with more states jumping on board since. Good news for those who previously had to rely on offshore betting accounts to place their bets. Those types of accounts had complicated payment and withdrawal processes. A high number of offshore companies proved to be untrustworthy and as there was no regulation, complaints of mistreatment fell on deaf ears. Extortionate vig amounts were also required, stripping rightful returns from those who were wagering.
Now with Legal wagering live, Iowan residents can wager safely whenever they feel from a number of legal, fully licensed and regulated operators.
How to place a bet in Iowa
In order to place a mobile bet, users are required to register for an account first. To legally register for a betting account you must be aged 21 or over. It is illegal for people below this age to bet in the state.
Registration can be done from a mobile phone or tablet. However a verification process is also present whereby users are then required to attend in-person at a specific land based casino with identification documents.
This step of the process is set within the law and will remain in place until at least 2021. Other states do not have this in-person verification requirement. However Iowa does, so people will need to conform to this step in order to successfully wager online.
A little inconvenient, but this step only needs to be done the once. After the registration has been verified, users can then bet online whenever and however they wish on the markets offered – as long as they are within state lines.
Iowa Sportbook apps list
Pointsbet are a huge brand in Australia and are increasingly making headway in the American markets. The brand have officially launched their sportsbook app across the state of Iowa, providing more choice to place bets from mobile devices. Pointsbet partnered up with land-based casino company Catfish Bend back in April 2019 in order to enter the legal market space.
It is the Catfish Bend casino that needs to be attended with identification to verify the details entered in the online account registration form. The casino is located on Winegard Dr, Burlington.
The Pointsbet mobile service is one of the few services in the state that does not necessarily require a native app download. Registering, depositing, withdrawing and betting can all be done directly from a mobile web browser. Examples of which are Safari, Firefox, Google Chrome and Explorer. All of these functions can also be achieved from the Pointsbet native apps that are also available.
User-friendly menus and a dark theme make the mobile service look good and easy to navigate. Lines are competitively priced and bonuses are frequent that offers extra value across multiple sports. We really like the Pointsbet app and rate is as one of the best betting apps in the state.
The service is also a specialist sports wagering service, rather than a casino looking to cash in by diversifying. This allows for a more in-depth sportsbook and what feels like a more immersive experience overall in regards to sports betting.

William Hill is the most popular and most recognised name globally. The William Hill Sportsbook App (Full Review here) operates from four different land-based venues within the state.
1. Prairie Meadows, Altoona.
2. Isle Casino Hotel, Bettendorf.
3. Isle Casino Hotel, Waterloo.
4. Lakeside Hotel Casino, Osceola.
One of these sites must be visited initially to complete the verification process part of the registration.
There are a good amount of payment options and withdrawal methods available on the William Hill app. You can deposit cash directly into your online account from any of the four venues mentioned above, plus also at CVS on Lincoln Way, in Ames. You can also deposit directly from the app using a debit card, ACH (e-check) or with a William Hill prepaid card.
There are lots of props available, as well as offering money line bets, spread betting options and under/over markets. The app is well laid out and comes with clear guides on how to bet and get started for those who are new or not sure.
Q Sportsbook is run by Q Casino and offers mobile betting in Iowa around the clock to those people inside state lines. The casino itself is very up-market in its approach. High-speed Internet on tap, wall-to-wall screens, USB charging ports has all been added in the latest renovation of the main sports bar. Outside the sports bar is a top-end casino, hotel and dining experience that makes for an incredible night out.
The apps are also very handy for those times when you want to place a bet in the comfort of your own home.
Registration for the online service can be started and completed at the Q casino venue. Pre-registration is possible from the Q Sportsbook apps (iOS and Android), but then a visit to a Q casino Sportsbook customer service kiosk is required to complete the registration and verification process. Photo ID will be needed when verifying.
Hard Rock Sportsbook
Hard Rock fans will be fist-pumping to hear that there is an online sportsbook available here too. Although the brand is better known for its casino operation, the sportsbook is also worthy of the name.
Plenty of prop bets are offered here. That many that some of the props available can be initially a little puzzling. The ‘house rules’ section of the app is the place to go during these times. Full explanations of all wager types and props can be found here.
A registration form is available from the Hard Rock Sportsbook website. This form needs to be printed off, filled in and then brought in-person to either the Hard Rock Sportsbook kiosk inside the casino or at the Rock Star Rewards Club Desk located in Sioux City.
There’s also a new customer offer on currently, offering a $100 Risk-Free Bet. Visit the Hard Rock hotel and casino today to find out more.
The Elite Sportsbook service operates out of three casinos within the state. These are
1. Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, Riverside.
2. Rhythm City Casino Resort, Quad Cities
3. Grand Falls Casino & Golf Resort, Larchwood
All three locations offer mobile betting in Iowa. The whole registration process here has to be done at one of the three resorts mentioned above. There is no pre-registration option available from the Elite Sportsbook app. Therefore, we recommend heading straight to one of these venues as your first port of call if you are looking to bet with this particular brand.
The online service is available both as an app and as a mobile web site. The Mobile site can be accessed from any mobile web browser and does not take up any internal memory space on the mobile device it is being played from.
The app has a dark theme, gilt-edged with gold trimming for a simple, polished look and feel. There’s not as much choice of sports as other apps available in the state. However, the main events are covered and covered in detail. For example, there were over 175 prop bets available on the Super Bowl LIV in 2020. For those who like to visit the casinos as well as place bets online, this option is a very good one to consider, in our opinion.
