Your Complete Guide On How To Read Betting Lines

Betting lines are part and parcel of the betting world but you’d be surprised by home many people don’t quite understand them properly. Which is not ideal if you are looking to place a bet.

For anyone looking to begin using the best betting apps and place bets on the likes of NFL, basketball, and soccer, knowing your betting lines is important.

Here at Bettingapps.com we’re here to help and this handy guide is ideal for beginners looking to start playing with betting lines.

What Are Betting Lines?

First things first is, of course, to understand what they actually are.

Essentially they’re a type of wager that handicaps a certain team to offer a more level playing field and a more even market.

This is done by giving both teams a margin, also known as a line.

For example, you might want to place an NFL bet on a game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys.

In this instance, the Cowboys might be heavy favorites for the game. A sportsbook app might believe that the Cowboys are 7.5 points better than the Giants and would put a handicap in place. This means your odds could look slightly like this:

  • New York Giants: +7.5 (-110)
  • Dallas Cowboys: -7.5 (-110)

In this example, the Cowboys have been given a 7.5 point handicap which essentially gives the Giants a 7.5 point head start. The number in brackets is the odds the Sportsbook would be giving.

You then would bet on either team and the winner would take the handicap into account.

Calculating A Winner From Betting Lines

You can calculate betting lines incredibly easily. All you really have to do is place the handicap into the final score.

So, if you were to place a bet with the 7.5 betting line that was given an example, you would work it out in the following way.

Giants 18 – 24 Cowboys

Let’s say the game between the Giants and Cowboys finished 18-24 and you placed a bet on the Cowboys with a -7.5 Handicap.

To calculate if your bet is a winner you would simply minus the 7.5 from the Cowboys score, which would give them a total point score of 16.5.

This would essentially mean that in the eyes of this wager, the Giants won the game 18 – 16.5. If the Cowboys had scored 26 points in the game the bet would have won because their handicap score would be 18.5.

On the other hand, if you were to back the Giants, they would have to avoid defeat by seven points or less.

Therefore in order to calculate if you’re a winner, you would add 7.5 to the Giants score and if it exceeds the score of the Cowboys you have a winning bet.
