Betting against the spread is one of the most common and basic types of bet in sportsbook betting.
If you’re getting started its one you’ll use regularly in order to boost your odds and is offered by many sportsbook betting apps across a variety of sports.
If you’re new to betting it’s always useful to understand this market and below you’ll find all you need to know about betting against the spread…
What Is Betting Against The Spread?
Of course, the most important place to start is with what betting against the spread actually is. It’s a relatively easy market to understand and essentially involves backing the team you think will win.
However, there is a bit of a twist as in this market teams will be given a handicap in which they must overcome.
The underdog of the game will be essentially given a head start which must be taken into account when placing your bet.
Let’s say you were betting against the spread with SugarHouse on a match between the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The market would look a little like this:
New England Patriots: -7.5 (-110)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: +7.5 (-110)
In this instance, the Patriots are clear favorites for the tie and if you were to bet on them against the spread they would have to win the match by eight clear points for your bet to win.
The 7.5 figures in the example above represent the handicap given to them, with the figure in brackets the odds on offer.
Therefore if you were to bet on the Buccaneers, all they would be required to do is not lose the game by more than eight points, as the betting market has essentially handed them a 7.5 point head start.
That means of the result was to finish Patriots 24-18 Buccaneers, a bet on the Tampa Bay side would win, as they lost by only six points and a bet on the Patriots would lose.
Alternatively, a 30-22 result would see a bet on the Patriots win as they won by eight clear points.
This is always a good market to bet on favorites as you’d receive much more favorable odds on the Patriots than you would in the standard money line market, as the chances of them winning due to the handicap have slimmed.
What Sports Can I Bet Against The Spread?
There are many sports in which you can bet against the spread. In general, you’ll find punters enjoy this market most in NFL betting.
However, the likes of NHL, NBA, Soccer and more will have markets in which you can play.
Essentially, any sports in which teams earn points you can bet against the spread, these include:
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
Why Play Against The Spread?
The reason most players bet against the spread is to improve their odds and ultimately their payout.
The best way to do that is to uncover the matches in which you believe the sportsbook has under or overvalued the spread. This way you can make some good money with your bets and also have a realistic chance of winning.
Either way, you will improve your odds by betting against the spread on the favorite.
Things to note when considering the betting against the spread market is things such as form, head-to-head, player injuries and team news as they can be instrumental in how likely a team is to secure them against the spread winning margin. For example, if a team is in free-scoring mode thanks to an in-form player you’re much more likely to win your against the spread wager than you would be if that player was missing.
