Play Alberta - Top Trusted Sportsbook in the Province
Play Alberta is the provincially run sportsbook in Alberta and has long been the safest and most trustworthy betting option as the only regulated sportsbook in the province.
It will remain operating in the province, even with the launch of the new province-wide regulated market that should welcome dozens of licensed sportsbooks and more competition.
Play Alberta has evolved over the last five years and offers users an above average betting experience that will continue to offer the strongest user protections in the province.
In our view, Play Alberta is one of the best provincially operated sportsbooks in Canada. As Alberta's regulated betting platform for more than five years, it has built a reputation for providing a safe and reliable betting experience, along with a user-friendly interface, regular odds boosts, and solid parlay-building features.
While Alberta's newly regulated market is set to welcome dozens of additional licensed sportsbooks, we still see Play Alberta as an excellent option for new bettors looking for a trusted and straightforward place to get started.

Apps Expected to Remain in Regulated Alberta Market
With the exciting update about Alberta's regulated market launch coming in mid-July, you might be curious if certain apps that are currently available in Alberta will also enter the regulated market. We put together a quick list of our favourite apps that, based on recent reports and their actions at the start of the Ontario market, we expect to be early entrants in the new Alberta market.
BetVictor
BetVictor stands out as a strong option for bettors in Alberta seeking a betting app that offers a reliable and trustworthy sportsbook. You can regularly find odds boosts and early payout promos throughout the week. However, one drawback that users have noted about BetVictor is that it does not provide as many promotions for high-profile games compared to its competitors.

If there is a big event or tournament happening in Canada, BET99 is almost certainly going to have markets for it and have them featured up front and easy to find. We've become big fans of BET99 recently and fully anticipate it entering the regulated market and remaining a go-to choice for us in Alberta.

What to Know Ahead of Alberta Launch
With Alberta’s new regulated betting market set to launch in July, 2026, we wanted to put together some quick info and questions that you might have leading up to the launch!
- Restrictions around advertising bonuses and promotions are expected to mirror the current restrictions in Ontario.
- Existing user accounts on grey-market sportsbooks will not transfer to the regulated market if that brand enters Alberta’s new market. That means if you have an account with a brand like BetVictor and they enter the regulated market, you will have to create a new account on the regulated version. Unfortunately, any open bets or futures will not carry, so you will need to cash out or cancel the bets if you can.
- Users will be able to pre-register for some sportsbooks before the initial launch, which may come with special promos and early sign-up bonuses.
- Alberta will not cap the number of licences for operators, which should create a strong, competitive market over time. This should help users get better odds and bonuses as each brand competes for user loyalty.
- PlayAlberta will still exist, so if you prefer to use that brand, you will be able to continue doing so.
- Some restrictions around types of bets are expected, such as betting on minor-league hockey and election betting. Those are not expected to be allowed in the new market.
- Payments and withdrawals are expected to be faster than what users see from offshore brands. The regulated market in general will create a safer betting environment, giving more protection to users than they have had in the grey market.
- Grey market sites that do not enter the regulated market will still be available in Alberta; users will not have the same protections around disputes and payment issues as they will from regulated brands.
- Like other regulated markets, you will need to be physically present in Alberta to access the regulated brands and place a bet. Sportsbooks have strong geo-location for this reason.
Always Gamble Responsibly

Responsible gambling is an essential aspect of using betting apps in Canada. Players are encouraged to see sports betting as a form of entertainment rather than a way to make money, and to only wager what they can afford to lose.
If gambling ceases to be enjoyable or starts to feel problematic, help is accessible through confidential services throughout Canada.

Growing up in New England, it was pretty much impossible for me not to become a huge sports fan. Winters were spent snowboarding all morning then watching the Patriots win in the afternoons, so I never really had a choice. Now, I get to turn that passion into my work by writing about the sports betting world and helping Canadian bettors find the best betting apps for their needs. My goal is to break things down in a clear, honest, and approachable way, so readers feel confident and informed before placing a bet, like getting advice from a friend who’s already done the homework.
